Thirty minutes later, Lucia was out in one of the fields with Owen, Emily, and her uncle Daniel, who was Emily’s brother.

To lighten the mood, Emily had suggested they all transform and go for a run in the forest. But then Lucia had to break the news that she didn’t know how.

“So you’ve never shifted, right?” Daniel asked.

“Never.”

“Have you tried?”

“Yes. Owen showed me how to shift when we were on the island where I live. But no matter how hard I concentrated, I couldn’t do it.”

“Don’t worry,” Daniel said. “From what I heard from Brynne, your family taught you to guard your abilities to protect you. And I’m grateful to them for that. Who knows what would have happened if they hadn’t? But we wolves can get ourselves worked up into a twist, just like humans. You learned from an early age that your abilities were something to hide, so it might take a minute to make that switch.”

“Especially because you don’t know us that well yet,” Emily chimed in.

“So, let’s get started.”

She stripped down to her sports bra and underwear, which didn’t feel odd to her since she was used to wearing a bikini on the island all the time and she had guests at her hotel who frequently sunbathed nude.

She’d heard Americans were more modest than Brazilians, but apparently, a pack didn’t have any modesty, because her family had already warned her that they didn’t worry about clothes when they were about to shift.

“Owen’s already taught you to be aware of your surroundings. Make sure there aren’t any people, cars, or drones.” Emily put her hands on Lucia’s temples. “Now, exhale. And count to ten in your head. As you do, picture your body going from a human standing up to a wolf on four legs. We get big when we switch over, so don’t picture a husky or a malamute. Picture something twice as large. Picture fur that’s the color of your dark hair, and brown eyes like yours. Picture all your enhanced senses moving into a different body.”

Lucia let go. She quit trying to overthink the process and listened to her aunt’s soothing voice. Next to her, Owen stood there, quietly supportive. He let her new family give her instructions, and she was just happy to have him there with her.

Lucia felt a prickling sensation creep over her entire body. It didn’t hurt, but she’d never felt it before. Then, with a jerking motion, her body began to change. She felt her teeth first, and then her eyes. Her vision had already been far better than a human’s, but now it was even sharper, just like her hearing and her sense of smell were.

Then, with a sudden jolt, she was a wolf. As her uncle had said, a really big wolf. She turned toward Owen, who was watching her with a proud smile. She had to be the size of a small horse—her head came up nearly to his chest.

Her aunt and uncle jumped up and down, cheering wildly.
